Frank Lampard told to ditch preferred formation and move Timo Werner amid more struggles

Frank Lampard has been told his Chelsea side are "predictable" and urged to switch Timo Werner's position to help overturn their recent run of bad results.

Werner has not scored in his last 12 outings for the Blues and struggled to provide a threat in his favoured central striker role against Man City on Sunday.

The German has been largely used on the left of a front three this season, but Lampard saw fit to move him in-field through the middle at the weekend in an attempt to get him scoring again.

Sadly for Chelsea, it failed to pay off, and Paul Merson believes Lampard must now alter his system to get the best out of the wealth of stars in his squad.

"At the moment it does not look like there is a plan, Chelsea look like a group of top players who have been told to just go out and play," Merson told Sky Sports.

"Lampard went with the pace of Timo Werner, Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech against Manchester City but after the game he probably thought he should have gone with Olivier Giroud. That’s down to inexperience and learning.

"They need to ditch the 4-3-3, get Kai Havertz behind a front two, get two up front, play that way and cause teams problems, because as it stands things are predictable with Chelsea."

While Werner has faltered, Giroud has enjoyed somewhat of a resurgence, scoring eight times in as many matches to put himself into regular contention again.

Tammy Abraham has also been on the mark three times in his last two games, but Merson is still not convinced either striker can fulfil the No.9 duties adequately at Stamford Bridge.

"I don’t know where Werner plays," he added. "I think Chelsea may have signed him to play as a striker, but that is not working, and if his best position is off the left, then Chelsea need a centre forward.

"No disrespect to Olivier Giroud or Tammy Abraham, but you are not going to win the Premier League with those as your front two.

"Giroud and Abraham do great on their day, but they are not going to be in the top six Premier League goalscorers this season, or any season.

"How many teams have won the Premier League without having a player in the top six scorers?"
