Frank Lampard tells Timo Werner his position in the Chelsea starting lineup next season

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has told summer signing Timo Werner that he will be playing as a central striker next season, according to German football expert Christian Falk.

The forward became the second signing for Chelsea ahead of the summer transfer window after the Blues secured Hakim Zyech from Ajax back in February.

Werner’s goalscoring exploits in the Bundesliga for RB Leipzig caught the eye of a number of clubs around Europe including Premier League Champions Liverpool.

But Chelsea stole a march on their opponents and completed the £47.5 million deal.

Werner scored an impressive 28 goals in 34 Bundesliga appearances this season while providing a further eight assists.

The 24-year-old can operate as a supporting striker, on the left of a front three or in as a main striker.

And it is in that striking role that Lampard has told Werner he will be playing next season, according to Falk, who was speaking on the byline podcast .

However, former RB Leipzig assistant manager Jesse Marsch told Lampard earlier in the month that the forward is better deployed on the left.

“He likes to drift to the left and then come in with his right," he said .

“He can drag the ball [out wide] and cross it or come across the goal as well.

"He's also good at finishing crosses from the right side when he's attacking in the box, but he's also good in the middle and he's good on the right, too.

"I think if you're playing with two strikers, which is what we did often at Leipzig, we gave them freedom to move to the left.

Fellow summer signing Ziyech has since joined up with the first team squad at Chelsea, but it will be a little bit longer until Werner will join his new teammates at Cobham.

Werner is not the only Bundesliga star that Chelsea have targeted this summer, with the Blues also attempting to make a summer move for Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Kai Havertz.
