Frank Lampard states if Callum Hudson-Odoi and Reece James will play for Chelsea vs Liverpool

Frank Lampard has said Callum Hudson-Odoi and Reece James will play for the U23s on Saturday, meaning they won't feature against Liverpool.

The 18 and 19-year-olds, respectively, featured for the youth team last week and will play once again for Andy Myers's side at Southampton tomorrow.

Hudson-Odoi has just signed a new five-year deal with the Blues, however he will have to await his return to first team action after his Achilles' tendon rupture back in April.

James suffered an ankle injury while playing for England U20s and played 45 minutes for the Development Squad last Friday in a 2-1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion.

Things have certainly changed at Chelsea, with former academy players getting a regular run out, with Hudson-Odoi and James two players expected to be part of the revolution.

Lampard believes that communication has been a big part of the link up with the academy, but that Hudson-Odoi and James aren't quite ready for the first team.

"I have so many conversations with them [the academy coaches] now and the work I have done before, I know that the line of communication is key," Lampard said.

"It is key whether these players are coming through or not. I have tried to introduce that as I want it. It is what I did last year.

"That’s just how I work so I don’t know about frustrations from before. We have to be careful here and not put it all on ex-managers or situations because the players have to show they are good enough and work enough.

"They have to show they deserve to be in front of other players. At the moment, we have got a nice moment because they are showing that. They are all coming together.

"We have got Callum and Reece James playing in the U23s tomorrow. We have a game in the week that they can certainly play a part in for the Carabao Cup. So they have been out.

"Ruben, we know more about as he is a little bit older. He has always been searching for more games which he was starting to get before he got injured.

"I think we have that right in front of us and hopefully there will be more beneath that.

"Billy Gilmour and Conor Gallagher is doing brilliantly on loan at Charlton, and others, I don't want to leave others out. The door is open but they have to go through it."

Lampard also confirmed that Antonio Rudiger is still not fit to play due to a groin injury.
