Frank Lampard speaks out on alleged racist abuse towards Tammy Abraham following Liverpool loss

Frank Lampard admits he is "disgusted" by the alleged racist abuse Tammy Abraham has been subjected to following Chelsea's defeat against Liverpool in the UEFA Super Cup.

The Chelsea striker missed the crucial fifth penalty in the shootout as the Blues lost 5-4 on penalties against Liverpool, with Adrian making the save to clinch the victory for the Reds.

But since the game, equality and inclusion organisation Kick It Out has released a statement to condemning the reported racist abuse directed at Abraham on social media.

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford also spoke out in support of Abraham with a message for the Chelsea striker on social media, with the England international urging the 21-year-old to keep his head held high.

And now, Lampard has called for action as he delivered his verdict on the situation.

"I am particularly disgusted by a so-called Chelsea fan," Lampard said, speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Chelsea's game against Leicester City on Sunday.

"Tammy asked me to take the fifth penalty because he wanted to stand up on a big night when the world was watching. Moments afterwards, somebody sitting behind a keyboard or a phone has said the most disgusting things possible.

"I don’t know how it’s allowed; it’s too easy. Something needs to be done, as well as obviously changing mindsets completely.

I’m so angry for Tammy and for us as a club. That's not what wer're about. The club does a lot of work against discrimination on all levels and it's a setback when these things happen."

Lampard also revealed that he had spoken to the striker following the game on Wednesday night, with the Blues' head coach backing Abraham to put it behind him.

"I’ve spoken with Tammy and he is a strong character," he said.

"He wants to do really well for the club this year. He’s a great young man."
