Frank Lampard sends Graham Potter message after shock Chelsea manager return

Frank Lampard hailed Graham Potter during his first press conference since taking over at Chelsea.

The 44-year-old made a shock return to Stamford Bridge on Thursday after being confirmed as the Blues’ caretaker manager until the end of the season.

Sacked by former owner Roman Abramovich in 2021, Lampard had been out of work since leaving Everton in January.

Potter, meanwhile, had been dismissed on Sunday following a 2-0 loss at home to Aston Villa.

Controlling co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali had wanted to give the former Brighton manager time to turn the situation around but ultimately could not keep him in place any longer.

While Lampard will oversee the final few games of the campaign, former Barcelona boss Luis Enrique has held initial talks about the full-time role. Julian Nagelsmann has also been contacted.

Speaking of Potter during Thursday’s pre-match press conference before Saturday’s trip to Wolves, Lampard said: “I want to say credit to Graham Potter who I don’t know that well but everything I see about him he’s a good man, and a very good coach, and sometimes maybe for whatever reason thing don’t align, don’t work, whatever, I’ve been in that situation personally.

“So there’s nothing that I will do looking backwards other than things that can help us with a view to moving forwards. But I’ll obviously have my own ideas.”
