Frank Lampard says Chelsea were 'stronger team' and unlucky against Liverpool

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has suggested Liverpool were lucky to win the UEFA Super Cup.

The Reds prevailed 5-4 on penalties after the two sides played out a 2-2 draw at Vodafone Park in Istanbul on Wednesday night.

With Liverpool below par for long stretches, Chelsea had the better of the game and could point to a number of missed chances.

And asked if his team could have been out of sight before the penalties, Lampard said: “I don't know about that because I respect Liverpool.

“But clearly for me we were the stronger team. We had bad luck at times and bad finishing at times.

“My overall feeling is one of pride in team performance and happiness.

“I am a terrible loser. You should be. We wanted to win this game. But we were very unfortunate today.

“We were slightly unfortunate but that's what penalties is, I suppose.”

Liverpool responded after a poor first half by equalising three minutes after the break through the first of Sadio Mane's two goals.

And Lampard added: “I was disappointed we conceded so early in the second half, the feeling was good in the first half and the lads were determined to finish the job.

“We thought we could have scored more before half-time. Typically at the moment the deflection went against us.

“But you have to understand that Liverpool have quality players who can hurt you at any time.

“Against Liverpool you can't have it all your own way and our reaction throughout the game was excellent.”
