Frank Lampard has been linked with taking over from Chris Wilder at Sheffield United, but a swift return to management does not appear likely.
Wilder looks set to leave his post as Sheffield United boss after just shy of five years in charge, with the Blades rooted to the bottom of the Premier League and destined for relegation.
The Sheffield-born boss is still loved by Sheffield United fans, but it seems a decision will be made to allow a new boss to get his feet under the table before heading into a full season next term.
The move is unconfirmed at this stage, but with a press conference booked for 5pm and with speculation rife, it seems very likely Wilder will leave his post.
And that has seen a whole host of managers linked, including former Chelsea boss Lampard, who is fourth favourite at 11/2 with Betfair, behind favourite Blades Under-23 boss Paul Heckingbottom, who is followed by former Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe and ex-Celtic boss Neil Lennon in the betting.
But such a swift return to management for Lampard is, in fact, very unlikely according to reports which emerged earlier this season when the former Chelsea midfielder was being linked to other jobs.
The Sun reported that it would take a 'significant offer' for Lampard to take on a new job due to the pay package he is currently receiving at Chelsea.
After being sacked in January, it was agreed Chelsea would continue to pay Lampard's reported wage of £75,000 per week until July, unless he gets another job before then.
And with that in mind, it seems Lampard does not want to give up his Blues wage before the summer unless the offer he received could compete financially.
It's unlikely Sheffield United, who are heading back down to the Championship and are currently sitting 12 points from safety, would be able to compete with that wage, even if they did want Lampard to succeed Wilder, should he depart as expected this evening.
