Frank Lampard's praise for Magpies; United linked to Ligue 1 striker: NUFC evening update

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard believes it is easy to see how Newcastle United have beaten Tottenham and Manchester United this season.

Elsewhere, Jetro Willems believes the Magpies were "unlucky" at Stamford Bridge, and the club has been linked to an in-form Ligue 1 striker.

Here are your top Newcastle United stories for Sunday, October 20.

Lampard's praise

Frank Lampard can see why Newcastle United have beat Spurs and Manchester United this season because Steve Bruce' s side are 'organised' and carry 'a threat on the counter-attack'.

The Chelsea boss has a lot of respect for Bruce and was certainly not taking the Magpies for granted ahead of Saturday's game, expecting the visitors to be very determined to get a result.

Newcastle kept Chelsea out for 73 minutes before Marcos Alonso broke the deadlock and fired his side to a 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge.

The result has sent Newcastle back into the relegation zone but Lampard was impressed by the black-and-whites' performance.

Willems on 'unlucky' Magpies

Jetro Willems has urged Newcastle United players to stick together after their 1-0 loss at Chelsea.

The narrow defeat plunged the Magpies back into the relegation zone and piled the pressure back on the team ahead of next weekend's tough encounter with Wolverhampton Wanderers at St James' Park.

Speaking after the clash at Stamford Bridge, Willems said: "It was close. I think we had the game under control and we were a little bit unlucky.

Ligue 1 star linked

Newcastle United scouts are keeping tabs on exciting Lille star Victor Osimhen.

The club's winter talent search is well under way as head of recruitment Steve Nickson and his team look to compile a list of options for Steve Bruce in the next couple of windows.

The 20-year-old has netted eight goals in 11 appearances for the Ligue 1 side this season after joining the club from Belgian outfit Charleroi for £10.8million.

Osimhen is a fully fledged Nigerian international who started his career in Germany with Wolfsburg and he has impressed Toon talent spotters.

Alonso on NUFC tactics

Marcos Alonso tried to laugh off the taunts from Newcastle fans after the game but revealed his current club had to work hard to earn a 1-0 win.

The Magpies were finally undone by Alonso's 73rd minute goal but Chelsea had to work hard for their win.

Alonso, who responded to a tweet about the chants against him with a laughing emoji, spoke of United's game plan.

He said after the match: "Newcastle played very compact and it’s not easy to find spaces to attack or create chances but I think we played well in the second half.

"We were so intense and finally got the goal and the three points.

"We believed because we knew the game would be like this - we were prepared for this and in the first half maybe we were lacking a bit of patience in the final third but in the end we were happy with the three points and the goals."
