Frank Lampard's parting words to Andre Villas-Boas come back to haunt him

Frank Lampard's spell as Chelsea manager is over after his sacking was announced by the club on Monday morning.

The Blues legend has paid the price for his side's woeful recent form, and looks set to be replaced by former PSG boss Thomas Tuchel.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for Lampard, but it is likely he will spend some time away from the game to lick his wounds.

And amid all the analysis and comment over his departure, he will no doubt not want to be reminded about what he said when his former Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas was given the boot.

The Portuguese manager - now at Marseille - took charge at Stamford Bridge in 2011 while Lampard was still a player.

But he lasted less than nine months before receiving his marching orders as a result of his disappointing results.

There were rumours that Lampard and Villas-Boas had fallen out before the latter's departure.

And speaking about why things didn't work out, Lampard claimed the job may have come too soon for Villas-Boas, who was just 33 when he signed on at Stamford Bridge.

In an interview with The Sun in 2014, Lampard said: "AVB had played his cards and it hadn't worked. I don't know if he was too young or whether it had come too early for him.

"One thing I will address is that a lot of people said when he and Phil Scolari and some of the other managers left it was all down to player power at Chelsea. That's a load of cr*p.

"I'm being completely honest. OK, AVB and I were not very close but I don't need to be close to my manager - but I am definitely not the type to act up."

Ironically, many will now suggest the Chelsea job came too soon for Lampard, and that he should have waited until he had gained a bit more experience in management.

It also seems there was a certain amount of player power behind the decision to let him go, with claims a number of senior names were frustrated with Lampard's lack of tactical instructions.

Whatever the case, Lampard's words about Villas-Boas have certainly come back to haunt him as Roman Abramovich wields the axe once more.
