Frank Lampard 'open to' Celtic vacancy after Chelsea sacking on one condition

Former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is being heavily touted for a move to Scotland to take charge at Celtic following developments on Wednesday.

The resignation of Neil Lennon has put the Bhoys in the market for a new manager, following a 1-0 defeat to Ross County on Sunday that left the defending champions 18-points behind league leaders Rangers.

Steven Gerrard's side are just seven-points away from sealing the Scottish Premiership title, their first since having to start from the bottom after the club was liquidated a decade ago.

It's clear that Celtic have work to do if they are to regain their title next season, with Rangers putting an end to their dreams of securing 10 league titles in a row, and Lampard is among the names touted for the vacancy.

However, a move to Celtic before the end of the current season would see Lampard forfeit wages worth £1.5m following his Chelsea sacking.

Lampard was not paid the remainder of his contract following his dismissal following a change in policy from Chelsea after the fees it cost to oust Jose Mourinho.

Instead, Lampard's £75k-a-week wages remain on the club's books and there is an agreement that he will continue to be paid until July, unless he gets a job elsewhere.

Football Insider reports that Lampard is open to taking charge of Celtic, where he would lock horns with former England midfielder partner Gerrard, but only at the end of the season.

The Blues' legend is keen on continuing to recharge his batteries following a dramatic first few years in management, where he led Derby County to the Championship playoffs before managing Chelsea during the unprecedented circumstances caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Lampard's name has already been linked with the likes of Crystal Palace and Bournemouth following his dismissal from Chelsea last month.
