Frank Lampard's most important January transfer decision according to 72.5% of Chelsea fans

Chelsea fans have told the club to go and find a left-back in the January transfer window worthy of matching the rest of Frank Lampard's team in order to continue their assault on the top four and the Champions League in 2020.

The former midfielder has already guided the Blues into a strong position in the Premier League, at least compared to some rivals, and will face Bayern Munich in the round of 16 in the most important competition in European club football.

football.london ran a survey asking readers who follow the club who they wanted to see signed in 2020 and the areas of the squad in need of the most attention.

Chelsea: A look back at 2019

A mighty 72.5% of those who responded named the left-back spot as the position that most needed upgrading in the transfer window.

Emerson Palmieri had been backed to prove his class with Marcos Alonso expected to leave the club in the near future but eyes are now looking to the market for a fresh solution.

In a multiple choice format thousands of fans had their say to pick out other weaknesses for the management team to fix.

Right wing was another position in need of some attention according to supporters with 46.6% calling for a new addition out wide to replace Pedro and maybe even Willian too.

Perhaps surprisingly 38.6% called for a new centre-back despite Fikayo Tomori's impressive outings in defence of late.

The fourth priority for fans came up front and through the middle. With Michy Batshuayi and Olivier Giroud both expected to leave, 35.5% wanted to see a new striker signed to partner and compete with Tammy Abraham.

Attacking midfielders, left wingers and right-backs were also flagged as being needed but were distant concerns in comparison to the positions set out above.

Fans were also asked who they would like to see come in as signing for the Blues in the new year and their answers tallied up with their observations over the areas of the team that need upgrading.

Ben Chilwell came top of the poll with 26.46% of votes. The Leicester City left-back is unlikely to be available in January with his manager, Brendan Rodgers, having ruled out sales of key players in the winter transfer window, but he is the one that supporters want when it comes to a big move in the summer.

When it comes to finding the next great winger down on the right, it is hard to think beyond Jadon Sancho - and that's perhaps why supporters picked him with 25.68% naming the Borussia Dortmund forward as the player they want to see come to Chelsea.

Kalidou Koulibaly was another ambitious target to add some genuine quality to Lampard's options at centre-back, taking 4.28% of the votes and as for the attacking role all eyes were on Timo Werner.

The German picked up 6.23% of votes with Kylian Mbappe some way off on 3.50%.

Whether or not these demands will match up with what Chelsea will actually do in the transfer market is another thing entirely.
