Frank Lampard's Mateo Kovacic issue for Chelsea's trip to Brighton & Hove Albion

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard confirmed that three of his new signings are a doubt for their opening Premier League game at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Ben Chilwell and Hakim Ziyech have injuries, while Thiago Silva is only just joined with the squad so is a doubt for the match.

However, Lampard will also be without another key player as Mateo Kovacic will not be featuring in the match at the AMEX Stadium.

The Croatian will be suspended for the match due to his sending off in the FA Cup final last month.

Kovacic picked up two yellow cards in the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal at Wembley, meaning he will have to miss the match against the Seagulls.

It leaves Lampard with a difficult decision ahead for the match on the south coast, with the decision on who plays in the centre of midfield.

The obvious choice, if Lampard goes with a 4-2-3-1 formation, is that N'Golo Kante is partnered with Jorginho.

If Lampard goes for a 4-3-3, then Mason Mount could drop in with Kante, while Kai Havertz could fit into a three-man midfield as well.

Ross Barkley could also get a chance back in the starting XI, however it's more likely that Lampard will give the nod to another midfielder.

Kovacic will only have to serve a one-game ban, so will be back for the Premier League game against Liverpool the weekend after.
