Frank Lampard's latest Jorginho decision questioned by ex-Chelsea keeper

Frank Lampard's decision to let Ross Barkley take penalties over Jorginho has been questioned following the spot-kick debacle in Chelsea's defeat to Valencia.

Barkley missed a chance to equalise minutes after coming on as Chelsea lost 1-0 to the La Liga side in Tuesday's Champions League, with the midfielder's spot-kick crashing against the bar .

Chelsea boss Lampard stood by his man after the game, insisting that .

There had appeared to be confusion on the pitch over who would take the penalty, with Jorginho - who has an excellent record from the spot - and Willian both seemingly wanting the spot-kick.

And former Chelsea and England goalkeeper Robert Green has questioned why Jorginho is not Lampard's man from 12 yards.

"When you've got someone so good as Jorginho at taking penalties, then it seems strange to take it away from him," said Green on Radio Five Live's Football Daily podcast.

According to football stats site Tranfermarkt , Jorginho has scored 13 penalties during his career - and has missed only one.

Barkley's missed penalty cost Chelsea dear as they slipped to defeat thanks to Rodrigo's second-half strike.

Last year's semi-finalists Ajax beat Lille 3-0 in the other Group H opener in what is looking like it could prove a tough group for Chelsea.

Defeat to Valencia was Chelsea's first since they lost in the Super Cup to Liverpool, and Lampard admits they cannot afford to make mistakes in the competition.

“We shouldn't lose the game. Clearly. At least not lose it. We had a fair few chances. And then the penalty, which we miss.

"We have to keep our heads up. There is a long way to go. It is a lesson. Teams at this level can hurt you.

"There will be bumps in the road for us with the youth we have and changes we are trying to make.

"But we need to be strong and be ready with Liverpool here at the weekend."
