Frank Lampard's first words as Chelsea confirm £47.5m Timo Werner transfer

Chelsea head coach Frank Lampard has said he is excited with the signing of Timo Werner.

On Thursday the Blues confirmed the signing of the 24-year-old Germany international after paying his £47.5million release clause at Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig.

Heavily linked with a move to Liverpool, however the Reds decided not to go in for the forward and it is the west London outfit who have pounced for his signature.

Werner becomes the club's second signing ahead of the summer transfer window, with Hakim Ziyech set to arrive at Stamford Bridge next from from Ajax.

Blues captain Cesar Azpilicueta has given his seal of approval to the deal and now the boss has had his say.

"I think he is clearly a player we liked. As a club we went for him, he has huge talent," Lampard said in his pre-Aston Villa press conference. "We were clear we wanted to improve and he will do that, I'm excited to have him.

"I had good conversations with him personally.

"It seemed like an exciting project for him.

"We were pleased he came to us."

Lampard also revealed that he has been in contact with Werner since the deal was confirmed.

"I spoke to him and he is excited. He is looking to finish his season first, but he is the type of player we are looking at," Lampard added.

"The talent he has and work ethic is what shone through."

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia has also revealed her delight after landing one of Europe's most highly-rated strikers.

"We are very excited that Timo Werner has chosen to join Chelsea," Granovskaia told the official club website. "He is a player who was coveted all over Europe and it is no surprise, he has that rare mix of being young and exciting and yet established and proven.

"We can’t wait to have Timo on board, but until then we wish him and RB Leipzig all the best for the rest of this season."
