Frank Lampard’s Chelsea starting XI with transfers to fight for the 2020/21 Premier League title

Frank Lampard was not thrilled when Chelsea failed to bring any new players into the club in January.

The Blues have already confirmed that Hakim Ziyech is set to join the club in the summer as their first signing.

However, Lampard will be hoping that there will be an opportunity to bring in others over the course of the transfer window.

Football is up in the air at the moment with the coronavirus outbreak forcing the suspension of leagues around the world.

Throwback to when Carlo Ancelotti named his team a day early

It means that nobody is quite sure when the Premier League will properly resume again, and what the future might hold.

Lampard has said several times that he is trying to get the club closer to the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City in terms of the table.

But to do that, Lampard is going to need some backing in the transfer window. So what would his perfect starting XI look like?

Goalkeeper

This is going to be something that will definitely be on the agenda come the summer and whether or not Lampard wants to move on from Kepa Arrizabalaga.

After his was dropped at the end of January, there have been big question marks over the future of the Spaniard.

Other options have been looked at, with Burnley’s Nick Pope being looked at, while Manchester United’s Dean Henderson has impressed on loan at Sheffield United.

Lampard will want someone to come in to at least challenge Kepa over the course of the campaign and push him all the way.

Defence

Defence has been a bit of a problem area over the course of the campaign, with goals being leaked too easily.

While the goalkeeper position will be looked at, so will defence and in particularly Lampard seems keen to bring in a new left-back.

Ben Chilwell still appears to be the number one choice, while Alex Telles of Porto also has been looked at.

In the right-back role, Reece James is expected to take over the main position for the future, with Cesar Azpilicueta passing on the baton.

Meanwhile, the centre-back position could be an interesting development. Antonio Rudiger is likely to remain as the first choice, while Fikayo Tomori doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, either.

At the moment, there aren’t many candidates on the transfer market that are really appealing to the Blues, so at present they would be going with the same starting pairings.

Midfield

One of the more settled positions at Chelsea right now is the midfield area, with a lot of options already.

Mateo Kovacic and N’Golo Kante, when fit, appears to be the main contenders to be starters, while Jorginho can also play a big role if he stays in the summer.

The emergence of Billy Gilmour has also meant there will be huge competition for places, with Ross Barkley also vying for a place.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek is aiming for a return to action, while there is also time to look at the loan players.

One who has stood out is Conor Gallagher, who has impressed at both Charlton Athletic and Swansea City.

As a midfield duo, Kovacic and Kante would likely be the midfield two to start and then to see how things go over the course of the campaign.

Forwards

With 13 Premier League goals and another two in the Champions League, Tammy Abraham is set to be given another chance to start next season.

At present, it seems Lampard will be looking for a back-up to the England international, which is not easy to find.

You only have to look at Spurs and how difficult it is to get a top quality back-up to a player who you know is going to be happy playing the supporting role.

One player who has been on the list for some time is Moussa Dembele from Lyon, with the Frenchman ready to make a move to the Premier League.

However, the big decisions are set to be in the wing areas. If the Blues are willing to spend £120million for Jadon Sancho, then he is going to be the primary target for Lampard.

Hakim Ziyech will join the club for next season, and the Blues will be hoping that he makes a real impact in the squad.

Chelsea (4-2-3-1): Pope; James, Rudiger, Tomori, Chilwell; Kante, Kovacic; Ziyech, Mount, Sancho; Abraham.

Subs: Kepa, Azpilicueta, Gilmour, Loftus-Cheek, Hudson-Odoi, Pulisic, Dembele.
