Frank Lampard reveals Petr Cech influence in Edouard Mendy signing

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has revealed that Petr Cech's initial assessment of in-form goalkeeper Edouard Mendy was brimming with positives.

The Senegal international joined the Blues during the summer transfer window, penning a five-year deal with the club, and is yet to concede a goal for Chelsea after three Premier League matches.

The 28-year-old has only conceded 132 goals in 133 total career appearances and looks to be the solution to Lampard's goalkeeping dilemma.

Speaking ahead of Chelsea's UEFA Champions League tie against Mendy's former club Rennes on Wednesday, the Blues boss revealed that Cech was a major influence in the decision to sign the player, having described him as 'low maintenance' and 'a very strong personality'.

"He’s made a very good start to his career with us," Lampard said.

"When we were [looking] to sign Edou, we made the inquiries, Petr Cech was heavily involved. All the feedback was that he had a very strong personality in the dressing room [...] that he’s very low maintenance.

"When I say low maintenance, I’m not trying to compare to other players. I’ve had that feedback with the other goalkeepers, too."

Lampard listed Mendy's work ethic as one of the qualities he has enjoyed from his new keeper, as well as his cool, calm and collected manner on the pitch.

"What’s been nice is that he’s shown that work ethic, he smiles every day, he’s not asking a million questions but he’s asking enough questions which are really relevant, little individual things about his relationship with the players around him on the pitch," the Chelsea boss added.

"He’s given off a sense of calm in his distribution and coming for crosses, things that you just want from your goalkeepers.

"It seems his personality is pretty laid-back with a tough edge when it comes to work."

Chelsea will be looking for victory in Wednesday's Group E encounter with Rennes at Stamford Bridge, as they aim to pull away from Sevilla, who are level on points with the Blues but behind on goal difference, at the top of the group.
