Frank Lampard has stated that Chelsea’s priorities are to bring in an attacking player this month.
It comes after the Blues were left frustrated by Newcastle United in a 1-0 defeat at St James’ Park on Saturday evening.
Lampard’s side enjoyed 70 per cent of possession, however with 19 shots, only four actually hit the target.
In the end, it was an injury-time Isaac Hayden goal which sealed the win for the hosts and the Blues left the North East empty handed.
However, Lampard does not seem quite as concerned with his defence in January and wants to solve the issue at the other end.
The Blues have been linked with several attacking players this month, including Jadon Sancho, Timo Werner, Wilfried Zaha and Moussa Dembele.
And while no deal appears to be imminent, Lampard has made it clear where his priorities lie.
"In attacking areas, because we need to be more clinical,” he said. “I wouldn’t say ‘a goalscorer’ but we need to be more clinical in the box in terms of our front line.
"When we attack and spend a lot of time around the opposition's box, we have chipped in with some goals from midfield and have people who can arrive from midfield, but the broader reality is that we need more goals from the front line.”
It may have been a sucker-punch goal for Chelsea to concede late in the game, but it is something that Blues fans would have been used to seeing.
The defeat was their eighth in the league so far, the same amount that they suffered throughout the entirety of last season.
However, despite his side being young, Lampard insists that they have all dealt with it before and must bounce back against Arsenal on Tuesday night.
"They will be hurt and disappointed," Lampard added. "In terms of learning, we have all felt these games before, whether it's academy football, first team football, Championship football, it happens.
"I don't think there is a naive nature or a young nature to it. I just think it's football and the practical nature.
"We don't finish chances and you leave a team in the game and you can lose the game. They are disappointed, not just the young players but everyone.
"I think they gave everything and I don’t think I can complain about that too much at all. They pushed and pushed but sometimes football just does that to you."
