Frank Lampard reveals Chelsea penalty taker after Ross Barkley miss against Valencia

Frank Lampard confirmed Ross Barkley is Chelsea's penalty taker after his miss against Valencia.

Barkley stepped up to take the penalty just minutes after coming on in the Champions League opener at Stamford Bridge.

Jorginho and Willian had both appeared keen to take the spotkick but Barkley grabbed the ball, only to fire his shot against the bar and over.

Many criticised Barkley's decision, seemingly taking the ball from Chelsea's designated taker with Jorginho scoring most recently in the Super Cup.

But Lampard insists England international Barkley is Chelsea's first-choice penalty taker.

"Ross is a penalty taker and is when he starts games. He took it and missed it," he said.

"It is a great story to say there is contention between players. If he scores it is not a story. But he took it and missed. That is it.

"The disappointment to all of us is that we didn't get chance to win the game. There is no issue in the dressing room."

Barkley's missed penalty cost Chelsea dear as they slipped to defeat thanks to Rodrigo's second-half strike.

It is Chelsea's first defeat since losing the Super Cup and Lampard admits they cannot afford to make mistakes in the competition.

“We shouldn't lose the game. Clearly. At least not lose it. We had a fair few chances. And then the penalty, which we miss.

"We have to keep our heads up. There is a long way to go. It is a lesson. Teams at this level can hurt you.

"There will be bumps in the road for us with the youth we have and changes we are trying to make. But we need to be strong and be ready with Liverpool here at the weekend."
