Frank Lampard pinpoints key Chelsea failing as he delivers honest assessment of Everton defeat

Frank Lampard admits that Chelsea did not do enough against Everton, and particularly so in the first 20 minutes.

The Blues suffered a 1-0 defeat at Goodison Park as Gylfi Sigurdsson's first half penalty gave Carlo Ancelotti's Toffees all three points, with Chelsea missing the opportunity to go top of the Premier League as a result.

A win would have moved the Blues to the summit of the division once again, but despite hitting the woodwork twice, Chelsea rarely troubled Jordan Pickford in the Everton goal.

And Lampard conceded that Chelsea were below par on Merseyside as they suffered a first league defeat since losing to champions Liverpool back in September.

Frank Lampard on Jorginho

“Not at our best. First 20 minutes were key for me," he said, speaking to BT Sport.

“I knew it was coming, some longer balls, some second balls and a team desperate for a win, with the capabilities to make it difficult, we found that out last year.

“And when you go 1-0 down to Everton, it absolutely suits their game plan to make things difficult for us and they did it very well. And we didn’t have enough. We hit the post twice, and you could argue that we maybe could have got a draw out of it, but for our levels and where we have been recently, it wasn’t good enough.

"We didn't show nowhere near enough for what we can do and the boys are gutted because we have been on a good run, and we know what we can do and if we play well, we play to our best here, we can get a result.

"But then if they are going to make it difficult for you, don't concede early with a long ball, second ball situation which we talked about and then don't struggle to create like we did.

"That's what we have been doing, we have been getting down the sides and the quality of our crossing has been really good, but [against Everton] it wasn't.

"We have hit the post twice, but those are just little moments, and credit to Everton, because they made it really tough."
