Frank Lampard opens up on Chelsea sack with pointed remark about Roman Abramovich ruthlessness

Frank Lampard has opened up on his time as Chelsea manager.

The former Blues midfielder took over the managerial reigns after Maurizio Sarri left Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2019.

Lampard had a successful debut campaign as Chelsea boss, guiding the club to a fourth-place finish, despite a transfer ban and the loss of star winger Eden Hazard.

However, the 42-year-old struggled the following season, slumping to eighth in the league by New Year's day despite spending over £150 million on the likes of Timo Werner, Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech.

This poor run of form resulted in him losing his job in January, with German coach Thomas Tuchel coming in as his replacement and eventually guiding the Blues to Champions League glory in Porto last month.

Still, Lampard has admitted he is proud of the job he did at the West London club.

"I'm in pretty good company at Chelsea, it happens, it's the brutal reality of football at the top level", he told the BBC.

"I'm pretty proud of the job I did, I came in at a tough time with the [transfer] ban and the loss of Eden Hazard.

"We worked really hard in year one to get in the Champions League and developing the younger players was a huge deal to me.

"I am happy, it was a huge experience for me. There were a lot of things I would have done differently, I was really happy in year one, in year two we had different expectations, there were complications, every team had problems this year, we had problems and I left my job."

The former England man is still without a job since leaving his managerial post after previously being linked with Championship side Bournemouth and Scottish outfit Celtic.
