Frank Lampard namechecks Leeds United as he outlines Everton's approach to the relegation battle

Everton boss Frank Lampard believes Burnley’s recent results have pulled Leeds United back into the fight to beat the drop. The Toffees dropped into the bottom three yesterday following Burnley’s 1-0 win over Wolves, and their 2-0 loss in the Merseyside derby.

Under caretaker boss Mike Jackson, the Clarets have picked up seven points from their last three matches and are now just two points adrift of Leeds ahead of their game in hand at Crystal Palace this evening. Everton suffered an eighth consecutive away league defeat at Anfield on Sunday and their poor form on the road is what has dragged them into the battle.

Speaking in his post-match press conference after yesterday’s clash with Liverpool, Lampard insisted his side must cannot afford to get ‘caught up’ in what the sides around them are doing, while also claiming Leeds are also now right in the battle.

He said: “It doesn’t change anything for me, I expected them (Burnley) to get a result today. We’ve got six games to their five, to try and win as many points as we can.

“That’s us and Burnley, but you can maybe bring Leeds into the equation because of the position they’re in now, they play tomorrow. We can’t get caught up in a game of what everyone else is doing, we have to absolutely focus on ourselves now for these six games.”

Since Leeds’ last game at Watford 16 days ago, the Premier League table looks a whole lot different and tonight’s clash with Palace is now of significant importance to Jesse Marsch’s side. A win for the Whites would move them seven points clear of the bottom three.
