Frank Lampard must learn from last season's mistake over key Chelsea player

Olivier Giroud showed his potency in front of goal on Wednesday when the Chelsea star scored twice for France.

The 34-year-old hit a brace as his national side hammered Ukraine 7-1, and it was a special moment for him.

Giroud became the second highest goalscorer for Les Bleus, with his 42nd goal taking him over Michel Platini.

The striker has a while to go until he reaches the number one spot, with former Arsenal striker's 51 goals for France.

Where does Jorginho's future lie?

Didier Deschamps has often used the Chelsea striker during his time with the national side, with Giroud being a key man in France winning the World Cup.

But what his two goals did also show was the ability that he possesses, and that's not something Chelsea boss Frank Lampard should really forget.

Last season, Giroud was underused at the beginning of the campaign.

With Tammy Abraham in good form, Giroud saw little game time with just five Premier League appearances and another in the Champions League in 2019.

Giroud was set to leave the Blues, however Chelsea were not able to bring in a replacement and the striker stayed with the club.

It was certainly a good thing he did for Lampard, with Giroud making 18 appearances in all competitions from February, scoring nine goals to help the Blues clinch a top four spot.

Giroud ended up signing a one-year contract extension, however this season he has struggled with game time once again.

He made just one Premier League appearance, lasting just 17 minutes, making another start in the Carabao Cup and another substitute showing.

It might not be a huge surprise that the game time has dipped again, with Timo Werner and Kai Havertz having joined, while Abraham is back in form.

However, Giroud could balance the front line, with his top ability to hold the ball up and also showing his finishing prowess.

Lampard will have to make sure not to under-use him once again this season.
