Frank Lampard issues Timo Werner verdict as Jose Mourinho admission speaks volumes

Lampard issues Werner verdict

Frank Lampard praised Chelsea 's new signing Timo Werner in his press conference on Friday.

“I think he's clearly a player that we liked," he said.

“I've certainly followed him for a long time myself, individually just as a talented player, even before I had this job.

“But as a club, clearly we went for him, and he certainly will strengthen us in my opinion.

Frank Lampard on what Tim Werner will bring to Chelsea

“He's got huge talent, had a fantastic season this year but before that as well.

“Where we probably couldn't do as much business in the last couple of windows for whatever reasons, it's given us a chance to see some youth have more time in the team.

“But we were very clear about the fact we wanted to improve. And Timo Werner is always a signing that will improve us.

“I'm certainly very excited to have him playing for Chelsea. And we look forward to having him.”

Spurs can't compete with Chelsea - Mourinho

Former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho says Tottenham Hotspur cannot compete with Chelsea's spending.

Mourinho has urged Spurs fans to be realistic after seeing the Blues splash the cash on Timo Werner.

“We know that we are going to be in the same league, in the same world, as clubs that are going to do completely different to us,” he said.

“You have now examples already of clubs investing and making important movements in the market and we are still nine matches away from the end of the season.

“But I think we are going always to be very balanced which is what Tottenham normally is.

“Would I expect us not to do anything and to stay exactly with the same squad that we have in this moment? My answer is no.”

Lampard's Loftus-Cheek warning

Frank Lampard has insisted Ruben Loftus-Cheek is back to full fitness but that the head coach is going to have to be careful over the minutes he gives the Chelsea star.

The 24-year-old has not featured for the first team in more than a year after rupturing his Achilles' tendon in a post-season friendly in May 2019.

And while Lampard is delighted with his progress, the Chelsea boss is remaining cautious with how much game time he will get.

“He is looking fit, taking part in the training games and working really hard to get back. It was a really difficult injury he had and we have missed him this season," Lampard said.

"He has got himself into a position where he is fit, but we haven’t had enough matches for him, so he will have to be managed, definitely, in terms of the minutes he plays. Not over-straining, but he is looking good going into this game."
