Jamie Carragher believes Kai Havertz does not fit into Chelsea's best midfield and Frank Lampard needs to find a different role for the Germany international.
The former Bayer Leverkusen man arrived at Stamford Bridge in the summer for big money with big expectations, but he has struggled to adapt to life in the Premier League.
Lampard has preferred a 4-3-3 shape this term, leaving no obvious spot in the team for the 21-year-old, who starred in the Bundesliga as a false nine or number 10.
Havertz has a single goal and assist in 12 Premier League appearances, playing in a slightly deeper role he is accustomed to and Lampard has certainly not got the best out of the German yet.
Havertz replaced Christian Pulisic as a late substitute in the 3-0 win over West Ham on Monday, and Sky pundit and former Liverpool defender Carragher believes the summer signing does not make Chelsea's best XI.
“At this moment, he is finding it tough," Carragher said on Monday Night Football.
"It hasn’t been easy, in a new country and he had COVID as well early in the season. I said earlier in the season, sometimes players fall into that category where you’re not quite sure where they fit in.
"I think for Frank, he’s probably not quite sure himself.
"He spent a lot of money on him so you’ve got to find a position for him in some ways.
"But for me, Chelsea look a lot stronger with (N'golo) Kanté, (Mason) Mount, and one other.
"When I say one other, I mean either Jorginho or (Mateo) Kovacic.
"It just looks a lot stronger as a midfield and I still feel Chelsea, Frank, they’re waiting to see what type of player Havertz really is and where he fits into this Chelsea team, into the system Frank wants to play.”
