Frank Lampard handed £37.4m transfer boost as Kai Havertz's Chelsea struggles continue

Here is your Chelsea morning digest for Wednesday, January 20.

Havertz struggles in Foxes loss

Midfielder Kai Havertz once again struggled to impose himself on the Premier League during Chelsea's 2-0 defeat to Leicester City last night.

The Germany international, who joined the Blues from Bayer Leverkusen during the summer, was one of four changes Frank Lampard made to his starting line-up, following Saturday's win over Fulham.

However, the youngster failed to take his chance, with him going missing in the middle of the park as the contest wore on. He was marked out of the contest by Wilfred Ndidi and failed to stamp his authority on the match.

His performance earned him a rating of just four out of ten in our player ratings.

Blues handed Upamecano boost

Chelsea's hopes of signing out-of-contract Bayern Munich defender David Alaba this summer have been dashed after it emerged that he is close to joining Real Madrid.

According to reports in Spain, Alaba is close to putting pen to paper on a four-year deal with the La Liga giants, after he turned down the offer of a new deal with Bayern.

Alaba had attracted interest from a plethora of clubs across Europe, but Madrid look set to win the race for his signature.

With that in mind, Chelsea look set to focus their efforts elsewhere, with it emerging that highly-rated RB Leipzig star Dayot Upamecano could the answer to their centre-back search.

And according to reports, Upamecano could be allowed to leave Leipzig this summer for a fee of £37.4million, with Leipzig prepared to accept a cut-price deal, as his release clause amounts to less than the above fee.

Milan close in on Tomori

Italian giants AC Milan are close to completing the signing of Blues defender Fikayo Tomori.

That is according to a report by CalcioMercato, who claim the finish line has been 'reached' between all parties, suggesting a deal is very close to being concluded.

Tomori, who has struggled to force his way into Lampard's plans this season, is set to join Milan on loan for the remainder of the season, with the Serie A club having the option to land him on a permanent basis for a fee somewhere in the region of €27million to €30million.

This season, Tomori has played just four times in all competitions for the Blues.
