Frank Lampard hails Billy Gilmour as former Rangers wonderkid shines for Chelsea

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard was full of praise for Billy Gilmour after the club's pre-season win over St Patrick's Athletic in Dublin.

The former Rangers youngster played 45 minutes as Chelsea ran out 4-0 winners and Lampard was thrilled with the impact of the 18-year-old.

Gilmour has earned rave reviews in the Chelsea youth system since moving south and appears to be edging closer to a competitive first team debut.

And with Chelsea under a transfer embargo, it could be the perfect opportunity for him to show his ability to new manager Lampard.

The Stamford Bridge legend has clearly been impressed by the showings of Gilmour in training and games during the week long trip to the Irish capital.

He told Chelsea TV: "Billy Gilmour has had a brilliant trip.

"As a young lad, the personality he has shown on this trip to play two games at the level he has played them is great.

"I just hope Billy pushes on with that this season."

Gilmour moved to Chelsea in 2017 after the two clubs agreed a fee of around £500k for the then 16-year-old.

He has since earned caps at U19 and U21 level with Scotland as well as winning the UEFA Youth League with Chelsea.
