Frank Lampard gives Olivier Giroud transfer update amid Aston Villa and Newcastle links

Frank Lampard has not ruled out the possibility of a January move for Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud.

The Frenchman has found his opportunities limited so far this season, with Tammy Abraham and Michy Batshuayi ahead of him in the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.

As such, there has been speculation over his long-term future at Chelsea , with Premier League duo Aston Villa and Newcastle United both among the clubs linked with a move for the 33-year-old.

And after Giroud was an unused substitute for Chelsea in their 2-0 win against Nottingham Forest in the third round of the FA Cup, the Blues' head coach delivered an update on his future.

"My answer remains the same as recently. I have spoken with him. If the conditions are that it is something Oli really wants to do and it works for the club and for me and the squad, then it’s something that could happen," said Lampard, speaking after his side's win against Forest.

"But it’s only when all three bases are covered. So, we’re still there.”

Giroud has only featured seven times for Chelsea so far this season, scoring just one goal in a 2-2 draw with Liverpool in the European Super Cup back in August.

He has played six times for France so far this season, scoring four goals for Didier Deschamps' men as the world champions booked their place at the European Championships next summer.
