Frank Lampard given transfer headache as Chelsea fail to sell two players in key position

Frank Lampard might have to deal with an awkward situation this season when it comes to his left-backs.

It is clear after the 4-0 win over Crystal Palace that new signing Ben Chilwell is the number one player in that position.

However, the Blues have been unable to shift either Emerson Palmieri or Marcos Alonso in the transfer window.

The west London club had been hoping to get rid of at least one of the back-ups before the window slammed shut this evening.

But it has been too difficult for a deal to come through on either of them.

Emerson looked the most likely to leave, with a return to Italy on the cards.

Juventus were the club interested in a move for the 26-year-old, however prioritised other transfers ahead of him.

Alonso looked to remain as the back-up, however his actions during the 3-3 draw with West Brom, leaving Frank Lampard furious, pushed him towards an exit.

A reunion with Inter Milan was on the cards, but a deal for the Spaniard couldn't be brokered and he is set to remain with the Blues.

The left-back had appeared a problem position for Lampard before Chilwell arrived, but now Lampard will have two extra left-backs in his squad.

It is unlikely that either will see much playing time, with Cesar Azpilicueta also another option to shift over to the left if needed.

And the Blues have failed to move them off their books today, which would have freed up money for the pursuit of either Declan Rice or Thomas Partey.

However, without freeing up the space on the books, those moves were unable to happen.
