Frank Lampard given huge injury boost as Edouard Mendy trains ahead of Sevilla clash

Frank Lampard has been given a boost ahead of Chelsea’s Champions League clash with Sevilla as Edouard Mendy trained with the squad.

The Senegal international goalkeeper missed the 3-3 draw with Southampton after picking up a thigh injury while with the national team.

Kepa Arrizabalaga took his place in the team, however another mistake led to a Southampton's second goal, putting him under even more pressure.

Mendy trained with the rest of the first-team squad at Cobham this morning and is in contention to feature against last season’s Europa League winners.

Mendy joined from Chelsea’s fellow Group E opponents, Rennes, last month for around £22million.

The 28-year-old made his debut in the Carabao Cup defeat away to Tottenham Hotspur before keeping a clean sheet in his first Premier League game against Crystal Palace.

Kepa has struggled for form, with three mistakes in his three league games this season. Willy Caballero featured in the win over Barnsley in the Carabao Cup before also conceding three in the 3-3 draw at West Brom.

Chelsea have no other fresh injury concerns before the visit of Julen Lopetegui's side, although Marcos Alonso is suspended and Billy Gilmour remains three weeks away from returning to training following knee surgery in July.

Speaking about Kepa's form, captain Cesar Azpilicueta said: "In football we have difficult times. In my position as captain, obviously I know him from a long time ago. I always try to help him.

"Sometimes you feel like everything goes against you. You have to have the character and personality to face it. I have no doubt Kepa will work hard to reverse the situation. The whole squad are fighting for targets as a collective. When you are a goalkeeper it’s a completely different situation but he will keep working hard, giving his best."
