Frank Lampard fumes as Paul Clement holds intense talk with Everton midfielder

Richarlison applause

The first half actually began with a fair amount of promise for Everton on Saturday.

It's only a shame the rest of the afternoon didn't follow that trend.

The Blues looked vibrant in the opening minutes of the match and were looking to take the game to Southampton for much of the opening minutes.

A few half-chances were created in that spell, but the visitors couldn't fashion a clear-cut opportunity for themselves to find the back of the net.

Not for want of trying, though, and one bit of hard work from Richarlison in particular garnered praise from Frank Lampard.

The forward was energetic as he closed down the Southampton defence, making sure they couldn't clear the ball and winning Everton a throw-in deep into the hosts' territory.

The Blues boss gave the Brazilian forward a round of applause for his efforts as that is exactly what he wanted to see from his side.

Unfortunately they couldn't keep it up for the entire 90 minutes.

Lampard fumes

Appreciation for the work from his players soon turned to frustration from the Everton manager towards the officials.

He wasn't alone in that sense, as many Blues supporters were angry with some of the decisions by the referee over the course of the match.

In particular, fans picked up on the fact that Oriol Romeu escaped a booking for a challenge from behind on Richarlison midway through the first half - shortly after Allan had received a caution for a similar tackle.

However, that was not the moment that Lampard really showed his anger.

Instead, that was reserved for a tackle from James Ward-Prowse on Richarlison which brought the Brazilian to the ground.

Again the Southampton midfielder did not receive further punishment for the foul, which the Everton boss clearly didn't agree with.

The fans in the away end weren't best pleased either, put it that way.

Pickford anger

Frustration ended up being a key word throughout the match for Everton, but even when the scores were level in the first half it was creeping into the side.

After what had been a strong start to the game for the Blues, too many mistakes started to creep in to their play.

Slack passes, mis-timed challenges, being second to every loose ball - all of it allowed Southampton to gain an upper hand that they would not relinquish for the rest of the afternoon.

Jordan Pickford could see it coming before many of his teammates.

The goalkeeper was called into action on numerous occasions during the first half, not least when he produced a brilliant point-blank save to deny Tino Livramento's effort from a corner.

But it was a rather innocuous gather from a corner which really incensed the England international.

With Southampton starting to pile on the pressure, a deep cross was sent looping towards the back post - which Pickford came out to catch on the second attempt after being challenged in the air.

Instantly the shot-stopper started shouting and angrily gesturing towards his teammates for not getting out to stop the attack quicker.

He was certainly right to be frustrated.

Clement talk

Andre Gomes was introduced to the action at half time in an attempt to bring something different to the Everton midfield for the remaining 45 minutes.

Allan had struggled in the opening period and was on a yellow card, which Lampard admitted afterwards did influence his decision to bring the Brazilian off the pitch.

However, a few minutes after being brought into the action, it was the Portuguese midfielder who found himself dispossessed as Southampton scored their opening goal of the match.

Around ten minutes later, there was a break in play as a player received treatment for the hosts - allowing players over to take water breaks near the touchline.

Gomes was one of those players, and he got a one-on-one chat with Paul Clement as he took on some water.

The talk looked fairly intense, with the Everton coach making numerous gestures to try and explain the tactics he wanted to see from his player - with Gomes listening intently all the while.

It would certainly be interesting to know what the pair discussed in that moment.

Flare finale

Everton fans generally had a rough journey to get to St. Mary's on Saturday.

Train travel was severely disrupted, storm conditions made driving treacherous - and the distance between Liverpool and Southampton made it a hugely long day for those in the away end.

Even so, that section of the ground was still packed out with loud Evertonians who were desperate to try and shout their side to another important result.

Unfortunately, they weren't able to do that - but clearly they'd come prepared for some wild celebrations.

In the closing minutes of the match, a blue flare was thrown onto the pitch from the away end as the ball was near the halfway line.

Another was launched into the field of play after the final whistle had already sounded.

Clearly these were meant to be for when Everton managed to find the back of the net, but a rather uninspiring attacking performance meant that they couldn't be used for that purpose.
