Frank Lampard explains only way Petr Cech could make shock Chelsea comeback this season

Petr Cech was the shock name in Chelsea's Premier League squad, but don't expect him to be featuring any time soon.

The 38-year-old hung up the gloves in 2019 to become Chelsea's technical and performance adviser, however he was a shock addition to Chelsea's Premier League squad this season.

Cech had been training with the first team goalkeepers and offering them guidance as part of his role, while also looking to keep himself fit.

However, no one expected the former Chelsea shotstopper to be part of Lampard's squad, but it could be a reality.

Lampard explained in midweek that the decision was made during the uncertainty around COVID-19, and he has expanded on what could happen for Cech to get a place in a matchday squad.

“I don’t want to get anything wrong with this, because it is more of a medical answer and there are things we are all finding our way with all this," Lampard said.

“I believe if we have a positive squad and within the goalkeepers, we would then see who was the most contact to that positive test and whether that warrants going into isolation or not.

“I think the feeling with the goalkeepers is that they do work quite closely together. I the work place we are still trying to stick by the rules of social distancing whenever we can, football obviously makes you break those rules slightly, but for really, really short periods of time.

“So I don’t have an absolute answer for that, but my general feeling when we looked at what happened was when players are training closely to each other and they could all potentially miss games then to have Petr on the squad list was a very simple answer.”

Lampard confirmed that Kepa Arrizabalaga would not be fit to be in the squad to take on Manchester United due to a shoulder injury, however Cech will not be in the matchday squad.
