Frank Lampard explains Fikayo Tomori omission and how he can return to Chelsea starting lineup

Frank Lampard has explained that Fikayo Tomori's omission from the Chelsea starting lineup has been purely down to 'selection issues'.

The 22-year-old had a bright start to his career with the Blues, however has slipped out of the team in recent weeks and has struggled to even make the bench.

The England international has not played a single Premier League minuted in 2020, while his only two appearances this calendar year have come in the FA Cup.

Tomori scored in the 2-1 victory over Hull City, and after the match hoped that he had done enough to get himself back in the league side.

However, Lampard has gone for either a pairing of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, or bringing Cesar Azpilicueta in to make a back three.

Tomori has gone from first or second choice centre-back to fourth, and Lampard explained that is is more down to finding consistency at the back.

"I have four centre-backs to choose from so generally every week two of them are unhappy," Lampard said. "And then people question you when you change it all the time, and question it when you stick with a back two or back three.

"So there is competition in that area. So yes, with Fik he always has to train at the top level, that goes for all of the young players because when you are out of the team, however much it hurts, you need to show a good attitude and train very well.

"And at the moment he is, he’s been in and round it and he has a long career ahead of him at this club without a doubt.

"And really it’s been more about selection issues."
