Frank Lampard delivers verdict on Chelsea's Champions League hopes after Liverpool defeat

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard remains confident of securing Champions League qualification despite his side's setback in the 5-3 defeat to Liverpool on Wednesday.

The result sees the Blues slip below Manchester United and into fourth place in the Premier League, and they are just one point above fifth placed Leicester with one game to play.

But with United and Leicester facing each other on the final day of the season on Sunday, Chelsea know avoiding defeat in their last game against Wolves would guarantee a spot in the top four.

Reflecting on the loss at Anfield, Lampard told Sky Sports: “It was extraordinary, even when you say they that started to run away with it I thought we were in it.

“In match-play we were OK. They're a fantastic team and we can't afford to make those mistakes. If we don't concede a fifth I thought we were coming.

“We have to suck this in and accept it here tonight because it's where we want to get to."

Lampard is aware it will be a difficult game against Wolves, who are fighting for a Europa League qualification spot, but believes his team should have what it takes to finish off the job.

He added: "[The Wolves game] is huge, we know the situation, it's in our hands to get a result against a very good Wolves team.

“To get where we want to be the pressure is what we should have.”

Following the do-or-die game against Wolves, Chelsea have the small matter of an FA Cup final against London rivals Arsenal on August 1, and Lampard will no doubt then turn his attentions towards next season, where the additions of Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner could transform the team into genuine Premier League title contenders.
