Frank Lampard delivers major warning to Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and the Chelsea youngsters

The Chelsea supporters will have been delighted to see a number of academy prospects given their chance to shine in the opening game of the Premier League season.

Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham were both given the nod, while Fikayo Tomori was named on the bench, with the likes of Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ruben Loftus-Cheek to come back in after injuries.

A big section of the fanbase have been clamouring for previous manager to give youth a chance at Chelsea and a transfer embargo from FIFA has forced new boss Frank Lampard's hand somewhat.

Lampard, adnd assistant Jody Morris, of course, know the Blues academy well, with Morris having spent time as the Blues' U18s coach.

So the new management team are the perfect pair to assess the qualities of the young players and whether or not they are ready for the first team.

But Lampard has delivered a warning to those that are in or on the fringes of the first team - that they must perform to keep their place.

Speaking ahead of the game against Manchester United at Old Trafford, Lampard was asked about the young players in the team.

He said: "There’s energy in the team and two Chelsea lads starting who have come through the academy. But these aren’t gifts - they need to show they belong."

Mount and Abraham both started the game well, with Abraham striking the post with a fierce effort early on.
