Frank Lampard confirms Kai Havertz tests positive for COVID-19 ahead of Rennes

Frank Lampard has confirmed that Kai Havertz has tested positive for COVID-19.

The 21-year-old Germany international played in the Premier League game against Burnley on Saturday.

However, he did not train with the rest of the squad yesterday and was not part of the Champions League squad named for the match against Rennes tonight.

The Blues boss also confirmed that Havertz will undergo a period of self-isolation, as required by the coronavirus protocol.

Havertz made the move from Bayer Leverkusen this summer and has been a regular in Lampard’s side for the campaign so far.

He has started every Premier League and Champions League game so far, with two assists and one goal to his name.

Lampard told BT Sport: “Yeah, it’s significant because he’s tested positive for COVID in the testing going into this game. He’s come away from the squad, he’s in isolation as the doctor’s orders are. So we move on, and we wish him well at home.”

Havertz's fellow countryman and new teammate, Timo Werner, praised the midfielder during his press conference yesterday.

"I know Kai very well and I think he is one of the most talented players in the whole world," said Werner.

"He is a young boy, only 21 and he can learn a lot but can already play like a very, very old and wise player. I think up and until now he feels very well here. A bit like me, we have talked a lot about settling in and he feels he is very happy to be here.

"In a lot of games he has shown what he can do, what he can bring to the team. For Kai it is very important to score, but I think what you can see in his game he is a lot more than scoring goals as a midfield player.

"He plays a lot of key passes, makes a lot of movement for other players. He is very talented."
