Frank Lampard confirms he will hold talks with Derby owner amid Chelsea speculation

Frank Lampard insists Derby's defeat by Aston Villa in the Championship playoff final does not make a move to Chelsea more likely.

Lampard continues to be linked with a switch to Stamford Bridge with Maurizio Sarri's future far from certain in west London.

The Italian has come in for constant criticism throughout the campaign, despite leading the Blues to a third-placed finish and to the Europa League final against Arsenal which will take place on Wednesday night in Baku.

But even victory might not be enough to save Sarri's job, with Chelsea legend and record goal scorer Lampard the favourite to take over should he get the axe.

"I'm not interested in the speculation," Lampard told Sky Sports after the Wembley defeat. "It's not more likely.

"What is likely is that I will sit down with Mel Morris the owner in the next few days when the dust settles because he has been brilliant and the fans have been brilliant.

"We'll see how it goes. I have a two-year contract and I love working here. We'll see."

Lampard was bidding for promotion to the Premier League in his maiden season as a manager having been appointed by the Rams last summer.

His side produced a stirring comeback to beat Leeds in the semi-finals but fell at the last hurdle against Villa.

Anwar El Ghazi put Dean Smith's side in front just before half-time from Ahmed Elmohamady's pinpoint cross.

John McGinn doubled Villa's lead after a nightmare moment for Derby goalkeeper Kelle Roos as he failed to gather a simple catch.

Jack Marriott's strike took the slightest of touches from teammate Martyn Waghorn to halve the Rams' arrears, but Villa held on to return to the Premier League after three years in the second tier.
