Frank Lampard confirms Chelsea injury blow ahead of Southampton clash

Chelsea head coach Frank Lampard has provided an injury update ahead of his team's Boxing Day clash with Southampton.

The Blues go into the game off the back of an impressive 2-0 away win against rivals Tottenaham Hotspur on Sunday, where a brace from Willian gave them all three points.

Ahead of the match against the Saints, Lampard confirmed in his pre-match press conference that Chelsea full-back Cesar Azpilicueta is a doubt for the game after being replaced in the second half of the Tottenham match.

"Azpilicueta had a small issue, which is why he came off," he said.

"Apart from that, a couple of bumps and bruises."

The full-back has played in 16 Premier League games this season, providing two assists.

He was replaced by youngster Reece James with 10 minutes of the match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium left to play.

Should Azpilicueta not be deemed fit enough for the match, it is likely that James will deputise for the captain, having impressed in his 15 appearances in all competitions so far this season.

The 20-year-old has mainly been used as a substitute in the Premier League since breaking into the first team at Stamford Bridge, so could see the injury to Azpilicueta as an opportunity to establish himself as a starter in Frank Lampard's team.
