Frank Lampard cancels Christmas for Chelsea stars amid Premier League title concerns

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has urged his squad to be "role models" and forget about Christmas parties amid the ongoing coronavirus restrictions.

There will be no official club Christmas party this year and Lampard will remind the players of their responsibilities in a bid to ensure there are no private parties over the busy period.

Lampard said: "I’d better read up on the tier system — there are certain factual things about tiers that a lot of us have doubts about.

"But I know the basics and the players should do by now and I will reiterate to them their responsibilities. I think the Christmas party thing of yesteryear has mellowed now anyway.

"Players are so well followed on social media that some of the parties I might have been involved in are a thing of the past.

"Responsibilities for players are big, as role models to the outside world, for their professional careers, to do the right thing particularly when they are playing so frequently over Christmas.

"They have to live differently to the rest of the public and focus. I will have those conversations."

Lampard did admit that the Blues have missed out on team bonding this year as a result of the strict Covid restrictions, with Chelsea welcoming six new senior players to the squad over the summer in Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva, Kai Havertz and Edouard Mendy.

"We have missed out a bit," he added. "We have new signings this year, a new fresh squad in a way. We have missed the opportunity to go out to dinner together more often and it’s been one of the tough parts of Covid."

Chelsea travel to Goodison Park on Saturday to face Carlo Ancelotti's Everton side and Lampard has praised his former manager ahead of the clash.

He said: "I would never try to take something off someone as such, you can be influenced by people and I was heavily influenced by him as a player and as a man, at the time. He's right at the top in terms of the managers I've worked with, for everything about him.

"He's had huge success in his career, at various clubs, and one-to-one I found him a great coach, a great man, and as I say he influenced me. And I very much look forward at all times to seeing him and speaking to him."
