Rio Ferdinand has told Chelsea they do not need to spend £150million on a new defender.
The Blues' defensive frailties were underlined in their 4-1 defeat away to Bayern Munich in which Frank Lampard's defence struggled to cope with Bundesliga side's free-flowing attack.
Chelsea had already been linked to a host of big-name defenders in the summer transfer window but Ferdinand says the Blues do not necessarily need to splash the cash.
Pointing to Corentin Tolisso's goal for Bayern Munich, Ferdinand argued that a lack of communication was costing Chelsea at the back on too many occasions.
Speaking on BT Sport, Ferdinand said that the Blues should look for a defender who can organise players at the back, and that may not necessarily be the most talented option on offer this summer.
"You don't see one player's head turn until the ball's gone past them," he said.
"The ball went past the two centre-backs and they were standing there, startled that there was a man behind them.
"It's comical almost and, sometimes, you get a game as a management team that pushes home the narrative, which is actually that we do need to reinforce in those areas.
"Not just as players, but as characters, as people who can communicate.
"You spoke about John Terry before; listen, to buy that sort of player in today’s market is £150million, and they’re not about.
"You need someone, sometimes it’s not just about ability, you need a man who can come in and tell players to move.
"They can conduct.”
