Frank Lampard can copy Liverpool transfer tactic to unlock Kai Havertz and Timo Werner

Frank Lampard can get the best out of Kai Havertz and Timo Werner at Chelsea if he replicates Liverpool's transfer strategy.

That is the view of Reds legend John Barnes who has delivered his verdict on two of the Blues' big summer signings who have struggled for consistency in their debut season in English football.

Both Werner and Havertz arrived at Stamford Bridge with huge reputations after impressing in the Bundesliga last season.

The former netted 34 goals across all competitions for RB Leipzig, while the latter enjoyed a breakthrough campaign at Bayer Leverkusen with 18 goals and nine assists in 45 appearances.

Should Chelsea's big signings be learning lessons?

Chelsea fans are yet to see the best from either Germany international, with Werner now 12 games without a goal after drawing a blank once again in the 3-1 home loss against Manchester City.

With that said, Havertz did provide a glimpse of his quality with an assist for Callum Hudson-Odoi's injury-time consolation strike which has given supporters cause for optimism.

And Lampard has been told how to get the best from his players - and that includes no more spending and to focus on installing a philosophy.

According to Barnes, the Blues boss should adopt the same approach Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool have done in the transfer market.

"Chelsea need to stop buying players because they’re the best and work on a system which is suited to the players coming in," Barnes told BonusCodeBets.

"If you have a philosophy and a system of how the club works and the team plays, then it is easier to sign players that fit. Lampard is new to Chelsea and management so is still working out the best way he wants his team to play.

"Jurgen Klopp had two years at Liverpool before he started to do well and he was allowed the time to do that.

"Lampard has only had one year in management and he needs time because it takes a while to develop a system.

"Players they've recently signed like Werner and Havertz are not having a slow start because of their attitude, but they will only come good for Chelsea once Lampard gets the template right."

To Barnes' point, prior to Liverpool signing the likes of Alisson Becker, Virgil van Dijk, and Thiago Alcantara, Klopp brought in less fancy names like Georginio Wijnaldum who slotted into his system perfectly.

Now the Reds are one of the best teams across Europe with a template that Chelsea have been urged to copy in order for the likes of Havertz and Werner to come good.
