Frank Lampard as Celtic manager is a pipe dream because he couldn't handle a wee club Chelsea - Hotline

Harry Redknapp's assessment that Frank Lampard might be interested in the Celtic job if Neil Lennon does not stay in post certainly got the Hotline busy.

The Chelsea manager was axed at Stamford Bridge after a recent run of poor form.

Lennon is fighting to turn things around at Parkhead, but if the club coose a different path forward, Lampard’s uncle Harry says his nephew might fancy the idea of locking horns with Steven Gerrard at Ibrox.

Gordon Hendry, Ochiltree, loves the idea as he said: “I agree 100 per cent with Redknapp that Lampard would be an ideal fit to replace Lennon at Celtic.

“He’s spent around £240 million on dross in the summer and sits in ninth place in the league table. Let’s hope he brings his head of recruitment with him to empty Celtic’s sugar daddy’s pockets whilst he’s at it. Gerrard has nothing to fear from this type of appointment. Roll on 55.”

Benjamin Clarke, Balornock, gave his point and added: “Got to laugh at Lampard for Celtic. He couldn’t manage Chelsea, so what chance has he got at a big club like Celtic.”

Scott Cassidy, Bridgeton , had an alternative take and said: “With Lampard leaving Chelsea and Gerrard having already won the league in Scotland, then I think he is the perfect fit to take over at Chelsea.

“He would buy the best players from his current Rangers squad and it would be Rangers who would benefit most from the Roman Abrahamovich billions. The Blues Brothers forever!”

Frank McFerran, Carrickfergus, took another angle and said: “If Celtic want a young vibrant manager like Stevie G, why not give Damien Duff a chance? Everything seemed to go to pot when he left.”

A call from Steve McSherry saying Gerrard’s Rangers are average certainly sparked a response.

Drew Ferguson, Oban, said: “McSherry has been drinking too much sherry with this so called ‘average’ Rangers team when they have outplayed the so-called invincible Celtic in the last three of the last four Old Firm games, whilst beating teams of the calibre of Porto, Braga, Galatasaray and going toe to toe with Benfica. Not bad for an average team.”

Joe Smith, Coleraine, continued: “If this Rangers team unbeaten in the SPFL and European competition is average, the Celtic team that won eight titles and were awarded another must have been utter dross after the embarrassing results they had in Europe.”

Bill Duncan, Aberdeen, continued: “If Rangers are a very average team, what does that make Celtic when they are 23 points behind? Also, it doesn’t say much for the Europa League teams either.”

Stuart McLeod concluded: “Another delusional Celtic fan that can’t give the opposition any credit. McSherry claims if Celtic had played like last season they would stroll to 10 in a row. If my auntie grew a pair she would be my uncle. Rangers have been head and shoulders above their opposition not just domestically but also in Europe.”

Elsewhere, David Martindale’s fit and proper person’s review brought comment.

Iain Kilgallon, Dunoon, said: “The irony of David Martindale having to pass a Fit and Proper test being run by a panel of the most unfit and improper people to ever ruin, sorry run, our game, is really beyond words.”

Meanwhile, at Tynecastle, George Fairgrieve was not falling over himself at the club’s signing of striker Armand Gnanduillet.

He said: “Hearts lost out on one 6’4” striker only to sign another 6’4” striker the following day. Throw in wide man Gary Mackay-Steven and it looks like a return to Craig Levein’s old ways, high ball into the box, retro football.”
