Frank Lampard admits Chelsea were fortunate to leave Valencia with a point

Frank Lampard admitted Chelsea had a major let-off as they stayed on course for the Champions League knock-out stages.

Valencia missed a string of big chances while Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga saved a second half penalty as Lampard’s men rode their luck in the Mestalla Stadium.

Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham has also escaped serious injury despite being stretchered off but Lamaprd's men will go through if they beat Lille at home in a fortnight.

Lampard said: “Did I love the match? No I didn’t love it. Because it hasn’t been many times this season where I have had to say ‘we kind of got away with that.’ This was one of those because they missed big opportunities.

“It was a very unusual match because of the amount of good opportunities for both teams. We have to be happy with the draw because we gave away too many opportunities.

“Valencia are a good team and we should be better defensively than we were today. I am happy with the result, it was a really tough match."

Lampard also revealed that Abraham did not need to go to hospital despite his heavy clash with Ezquiel Garay at the end of the first half.

The Chelsea boss said: “The word at half time was it looked quite severe, a bang on the hip. Then the word after the game was it might not be as severe as we first thought. That’s as much details as I have.”

Lampard also excused keeper Kepa from a howler which saw Valencia midfielder Daniel Wass get an 82nd minute leveller while the Spanish side’s striker Rodrigo missed one of the biggest chances of the night to win it in the sixth minute of injury time.

“It was certainly a fluke,” said Lampard on Valencia’s leveller. “He didn’t mean to score and that makes it more difficult for the goalkeeper because they don’t expect to go off the far top corner. The cross came in too high for him.

“I know there might be the feeling he pulled his hands away, I’m not sure he would have got there anyway. I will have to look at it again and Kepa will be the best one because he’s very honest with himself and if he feels he could have got it then I’m sure he would say that.

“But we can’t look away from the penalty save. It wasn’t just a standard penalty save, it was a fantastic one and that’s what top keepers do to save you points.”
