Frank Adonis, the actor best known for his starring role in the film Goodfellas, has died aged 83.

His death was confirmed by his wife Denise, celebrity news website TMZ reported.

The star reportedly died at his Las Vegas home on Wednesday night after suffering a number of health issues including kidney problems.

TMZ said Adonis was on a ventilator and undergoing dialysis in the nine days up until his death.

His family chose to wait until after Christmas before he was taken off the machine, the website reported.

"He will be missed. He was a great father and an amazing husband. He helped all his friends he could”, Denise said in statement.

“Great writer, director and actor. He was my best friend."

As well as appearing in the 1990 mafia film Goodfellas, Adonis also starred in other Martin Scorsese films including Raging Bull and Casino.

He also directed One Deadly Road (1998).
