Francis Greenway High in Woodberry asks staff and students to isolate after positive COVID-19 case

FRANCIS Greenway High is "non-operational effective immediately" to allow time for contact tracing and cleaning, after a member of the school community tested positive for COVID-19.

Principal Ben Higginbottom took to Facebook on Wednesday evening to tell parents and carers about the case and to ask staff and students to self-isolate until they receive further advice.

"NSW Health has requested anyone who has been unwell or if you develop any symptoms such as a fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, runny nose, loss of smell/taste, muscle/joint pains, diarrhoea, nausea/vomiting or extreme tiredness to be tested at one of the COVID-19 testing clinics," he wrote.

"The NSW Department of Education will continue to work closely with NSW Health to ensure the health and safety of all students and staff is maintained," he wrote.

"The safety and wellbeing of our staff and students is of paramount importance to us at all times. As such we will continue to work closely with NSW Health to ensure that all necessary health advice is adhered to.

"While we recognise this will be disruptive and inconvenient for families, it is important that we follow NSW Health advice and take all necessary precautions to minimise the risk of further transmission to support our community."

Earlier on Wednesday, Carrington Public School notified its families about a confirmed case and the University of Newcastle advised its staff and students about potential exposure to a confirmed case.

Hamilton South, Weston, Tuncurry, Mayfield East, Mayfield West, Irrawang and Thornton public schools temporarily closed due to cases this week, after the bulk of students returned to classrooms on Monday.

This followed Hunter River Community School, Cardiff South, Kotara South and Garden Suburb public schools as well as St Paul's Primary School in Gateshead temporarily closing last week.
