Franchise tags can have big impact upon Lions free agency plans

NFL teams are able to designate the franchise and transition tag players beginning Tuesday, Feb. 19th. While the Detroit Lions don’t have any candidates for the tags, what some other NFL teams choose to do has a direct impact on what GM Bob Quinn and the Lions can do in free agency.

There are several potential Lions targets who could get tagged by their current teams. While it’s not an end-all proposition, it’s incredibly difficult to pry away players who do get designated with the franchise tag.

Among those players Lions fans need to watch closely:

  • Patriots EDGE Trey Flowers
  • Cowboys EDGE DeMarcus Lawrence
  • Texans EDGE Jadeveon Clowney
  • Seahawks EDGE Frank Clark
  • Chiefs EDGE Dee Ford
  • Giants safety Landon Collins

Pass rush is a primary need for the Lions, and adding a proven commodity in free agency is a common speculation for Quinn’s offseason plan. There are several attractive ones, but if their current teams use the tag it makes the market tighter.
