France’s sports ministry backs EWC 2026 Paris with official MoU signing

France is throwing governmental weight behind its biggest esports moment yet. The Esports Foundation and France's Ministère des Sports, de la Jeunesse et de la Vie associative — the country's Ministry of Sport, Youth and Community Life — have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to show their backing of the Esports World Cup 2026 in Paris, while building a long-term framework for esports development across the country, as shared by The Esports Foundation.

The agreement, revealed on June 29, commits both parties to collaborative projects aimed at helping young people develop transferable skills through competitive gaming,

Indeed, the Esports Foundation sees the partnership as a chance to generate real social and economic change. Practical outcomes under the agreement are expected to include gaming workshops integrated into school curricula based around teamwork, fair play and online safety. It sounds like a model that treats esports as an educational tool rather than simply entertainment.

France is already seen by many as the world's third-largest esports nation behind China and the US, with elite clubs like Gentle Mates and Team Vitality representing the naiton at the highest level. Hosting EWC 2026 can only reinforce the country's standing as a global esports hub.

EWC 2026 by the numbers

The Esports World Cup 2026 will be hosted at Paris Expo Porte de Versailles and runs from July 6 to August 23,. This is the third edition of the EWC series and the first to leave Saudi Arabia.

Here's what's on the line:

Detail Figure
Total prize pool $75 million
Number of games 24 esports titles
Tournaments 25
Countries represented 100+
Players 2,000+
Clubs 200+

That $75 million prize pool eclipses every previous edition of the EWC. An earlier record set in 2024 stood at over $60 million, which makes the jump significant.

Titles on the roster include Counter-Strike 2, League of Legends,Fortnite and Dota 2, among 20 others spread across the tournament's 25 brackets.

French clubs on the Paris stage

The French connection runs deep through the competitive lineup. Gentle Mates were drawn into Group C alongside Nongshim RedForce, G2 Esports, Xi Lai Gaming, while Team Vitality and Karmine Corp will play each other in Group B, along with NRG and Paper Rex.

The VALORANT bracket carries a $2 million prize pool, with the top two teams from each group advancing to a single-elimination playoff beginning July 9.

Beyond the bracket

The Esports Foundation has been building out the EWC 2026 ecosystem on several fronts. @JaxonMVP on X reported that the Foundation's docuseries Esports World Cup: Level Up returns for a second season on June 26, 2026, with all five episodes dropping simultaneously on Amazon Prime Video. The Foundation also confirmed OBSBOT as an official camera partner for the event, integrating AI-powered imaging technology into the production.

EWC 2026 will also run alongside the inaugural Esports Nations Cup, a nation-based equivalent competition.

On the League of Legends side, Karmine Corp arrives in Paris fresh off a strong showing at MSI 2026, where the French club competed against T1 in the Play-In stage, generating significant discussion across r/leagueoflegends and signaling the club's growing international profile.
