France v Scotland Six Nations match called off after falling victim to Covid

France's Six Nations clash with Scotland this weekend has been postponed due to Covid cases in Les Bleus' camp.

A Six Nations statement issued just before 12.30pm on Thursday said: "The Six Nations Testing Oversight Group (TOG) met today to review the situation in the French Camp.

"They unanimously recommended the postponement of the France v Scotland match. This will be ratified later today by the Six Nations Council.

"We will be working on the rescheduling of this fixture and will communicate the date in due course."

It comes after tournament organisers moved on Wednesday to insist the match in Paris would go ahead on Sunday as scheduled.

But, after further testing on Wednesday evening, it emerged that another French player tested positive for Covid, taking the player tally up to 11. It marked the camp's 14th Covid case overall.

The French Rugby Federation then suspended training and sent the entire squad back into self-isolation, as they were last week, just three days before the match was due to take place.

Title-chasing France were already due to be without leading stars, with captain Charles Ollivon and world class scrum-half Antoine Dupont, last year's player of the Six Nations, among those isolating. A number of players had been called up to replace those previously ruled out.

Les Bleus stand top the Six Nations table after two rounds following a comprehensive win against Italy and a narrow victory over Ireland, each away from home.

But concerns over this weekend's clash going ahead emerged when flanker Ollivon, prop Cyril Baille, hooker Peato Mauvaka, lock Romain Taofifenua and full-back Brice Dulin became the new members of Fabien Galthie's squad to test positive on Monday.

Nine of the 23-man squad that beat Ireland 15-13 in their last game were since found to have contracted the virus.

In addition to positive tests produced by players, head coach Galthie is among members of France's management team in self-isolation.

Next weekend has already been suggested as a possible back-up date for the match but Scotland boss Gregor Townsend is worried as many as 10 of his top performers - including Stuart Hogg and Finn Russell - will be barred from playing by their English and French club sides.
