France to reopen borders to UK tourists after month-long ban amid omicron fears

After a month long ban due to the rapid spread of omicron, France is set to reopen their borders - and it's great news for holidaymakers.

The long awaited move comes after First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced yesterday (January 11) that some of the current covid rules in place for Scotland would be changing with the attendance limit of 500 at large scale outdoor events being lifted from Monday (January 17).

And now according to Alexandre Holroyd of the French National Assembly, a "significant easing of travel restrictions will be announced very soon" with more information for British tourists expected in the days to come.

France banned non-essential travel from the UK on December 18 2021 amid fears over the latest omicron variant. However the country has not long changed their reasons for 'essential' travel with some people now being able to travel for work purposes.

If, as reports suggest, the French country will allow UK tourists in, they would be joining other destination such as Germany who have lifted their ban for tourism purposes.

At present, people wanting to cross the French border must prove they tested negative for covid within 24 hours.

They must also self-isolate for 48 hours after they get to France and take another test.

France's expected move would follow the UK, which eased restrictions for incoming travellers last week.

The fully vaccinated no longer have to take a covid test before entering the UK, and they can use quick and free to order lateral flow tests instead of PCRs after they arrive, saving a family of four around £300 on test fees.
