France to impose mandatory quarantine on travellers arriving from the UK

France is set to impose a mandatory quarantine requirement on people travelling to the country from the UK in a bid to prevent the spread of the Indian variant of coronavirus.

Gabriel Attal, spokesperson for the French government, said France would be taking similar measures to Germany by imposing "obligatory isolation for people who come from the United Kingdom".

He said more information will be released shortly but did not say when the new rules would come into force.

It comes after Germany started requiring people arriving from the UK to go into quarantine for 14 days from Sunday.

The new rules are in response to the spread of the Indian variant in some areas of the UK.

The possibility of tighter restrictions in France for British visitors was first raised on Sunday by foreign minister Jean-Yves Le Drian.

The minister suggested Britain could be put in a health category of its own, somewhere between the strictest measures France is imposing on visitors from India and 15 other countries, and more relaxed requirements being readied for visitors from the European Union and some other countries.

France is currently on the UK goverment's amber list for travel, which means anyone returning from France must isolate on their arrival back in the UK and take two tests.

Some amber-list countries, including Spain, have opened their doors to British visitors - but ministers in the UK are urging the public to stick to the green list when it comes to choosing holiday destinations.

Business Minister Anne-Marie Trevely explained earlier this week: “The reality is, at the moment, amber countries are still not meeting the criteria for our scientists to say that they should be green.

“So the recommendation remains ‘don’t go unless you have to’, and remember that, if you do go, you will have to quarantine for 10 days and that will be monitored.

“The reason we ask people still not to go is because there is still too great a risk as far as our scientists are concerned.”

The most recent data from Public Health England (PHE) showed that cases of the Indian variant of coronavirus in the UK rose by more than 2,000 in the space of a week.

The latest weekly data showed there were 3,424 cases of the B1617.2 mutation – an increase of 2,111 on the previous week.
