France’s Europe minister Nathalie Loiseau has told how she calls her cat Brexit as he is “unsure whether he wants to go out or not” when the door is open.
“He wakes me up miaowing like mad because he wants to be let out,” she is reported to have written on her private Facebook page.
“As soon as I open the door, he stands in the middle, unsure whether he wants to go out or not.
“When I put him out, he gives me an evil look.”
Her alleged remark highlighted disbelief in many European capitals at the Brexit-inflicted chaos in Britain.
Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte has even compared Theresa May to the knight in Monty Python and the Holy Grail who loses his arms and legs in a duel and then argues for a draw.
“Look, I have every respect for Theresa May,” he said in an interview with the Dutch broadcaster WNL.
“She reminds me occasionally of that character from Monty Python where all the arms and legs are cut off but he then tells the opponent: ‘Let’s call it a draw.’ She’s incredible. She goes on and on. At the same time, I do not blame her, but British politics.”
John Cleese played the role of a deluded swordsman, who refuses to admit defeat, in the black knight sketch in the 1975 Monty Python film.
Despite the jokes, many EU leaders are dismayed by Brexit, with France having taken a particularly hard line in negotiations.
